The Goa government launched three biofuel-powered buses here on a pilot basis on Satuday 19th August. State Govt. announced comprehensive mobility plan to the extent of Rs.150 Crores and this is a part of same. Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) which is the state run transport coportation will be responsible for operating the buses. The state government has taken three buses on a trial basis, and depending upon the success their number will increase in the days to come, he added.
The buses, which run on bio-gas or ethanol, have been manufactured by Scania Commercial Vehicles India Private Ltd. Scania will maintain the bus for 15 years and the state government will only operate the bus and collect the ticket and pay the company on per-kilometre basis. The ticketing would be done through automated system. The bus will have swiping machines. One can enter the bus after swiping the card. The chief minister Mr.Parrikar, said the ticket prices would be as per the general rates applicable in the state. Scania Citywide Ethanol Bus is a ultra low entry 400 mm floor height city bus, powered by an 270 hp Inline 5 cylinder Scania 9 litre engine complying to EEV Emission standard. Engine produces a peak power of 270hp @ 1900 rpm and delivers a torque of 1200 Nm between 1100 to 1400 rpm.
