Who is Alexander Dennis (ADL)?
Alexander Dennis is the world’s number one ‘double deck” bus manufacturer with 15,000 buses currently in operation. Founded in 2004 with roots as far back as 1897, they have manufacturing facilities in UK & North America. Alexander Dennis employs 2000 people and manufactures 2,500 buses & coaches a year. Alexander Dennis has seen almost 4 – fold growth in revenues to 700 million Euros over a decade.
ADL is the bus market leader in the United Kingdom with a market share consistently in excess of 45%. Its unrivalled expertise in designing and building double deck buses that are purpose-designed as city and regional buses has made ADL the worldwide market leader in this field, building over 50% of all new double deck buses around the globe.
Buses on Display
Enviro 200, a light-weight single deck bus 10.5 m in length and non -airconditioned. This is was one of the few Non AC buses on display. They enjoy an 80% market share in this sector and have sold 18,000 buses. Aluminium body construction with an unmatched unladen weight of 7.8T. Their international business development director Mr. Gustavo claims that a 12m equivalent with air conditioner will be under 8.5T unladen making it 2 T lighter than any equivalent bus in the market. With a start stop system, this vehicle is claimed to be 30% more fuel efficient than competition and seat as many as 46 passengers.
The second vehicle on display was the Enviro 500 in yellow colour tailored for Post Auto, Switzerland. A three door, three axles, two staircase aluminium construction with a full flat floor on the lower saloon.
Mr. Gustavo claims that the 15m variant can carry as many as 128 passengers while this vehicle has a capacity of 79 passengers and GVW of 26.5T. The unladen weight is again a full 2T lower than competition.
Markets they work on
ADL leads the market in one of the toughest operating territories for buses, Hong Kong, and has used this as a springboard to developing new markets in Singapore and Malaysia. ADL’s single and double deck buses have revolutionised the New Zealand bus industry since they were launched there five years ago. ADL successfully introduced the double deck concept to transit services in Canada, the USA and Mexico.
Recent major contracts include an ongoing supply of more than 250 Enviro500 SuperLo – only 3.91 metres tall to fit work with existing infrastructure, bus depots and bridges – for Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area transit agency Metrolinx in Canada, and 90 Enviro500 for Mexico City, where they are about to become the world’s first double deck buses used as part of a Bus Rapid Transit system.
In addition to the single and double deck buses of the Enviro family, ADL offers the Plaxton Elitei Interdeck coach in a left hand drive version for continental Europe.
With up to 75 passenger seats and 15 cubic metres of luggage space, this vehicle is the ideal solution for long distance scheduled coach services.
Mr. Martin, business development director of Europe sees the demand for double deck buses growing in central Europe. For electric buses (single deck), Alexander Dennis have partnered with BYD for chassis and battery supply. Double deck electric remains a challenge given packaging issues and they hope to find a solution to keep their pole position in double deck buses intact.
