Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) inducted the country’s first bio-diesel Scania Metrolink coaches into its fleet. Branded as ‘Airawat Diamond Class’, a total of 25 coaches are inducted and these are primarily retrofitted with bio-diesel kit. Bio-diesel is basically a cheaper fuel compared to diesel and is eco-friendly. Rajender Kumar Kataria, Managing Director, KSRTC said the emission levels of bio-diesel buses were 60 to 70% lesser than diesel buses, with mileage and engine efficiency being unaffected. Scania was initially awarded to supply 25 nos diesel powered Metrolink and now the coaches are supplied as bio-diesel powered. These retrofitted Bio-Diesel coaches can run on either 100% Bio-Diesel or run in 100% diesel as well. The kits are tested and certified by TUV of Germany for best possible safety even in case of Roll over and accident.
